Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' is one of Pam's Faves this season...this is what she has to say:
I love shady spaces and filling them with interesting plants that bring colour and texture is easy to do with ferns like ‘Metallicum’. A clump has been growing in my shade garden for years. Slow and steady but always reliable, it’s intricate and uniquely-coloured fronds add a touch of class.
Known as Japanese Painted Fern and loved for its silver, green and wine red foliage. This fern loves moist, shady woodland settings.
Perennial of the Year 2004! Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' is one of the most popular cultivated ferns. One look at its unusually coloured fronds and you'll know why! The fronds are silvery grey, almost metallic, with a purplish red flush. The stems and midribs are a dark maroon-purple. Together with the soft, feathery texture, the combination is spectacular. Grow it in part shade or shade in evenly moist soil for the loveliest effect.
