Hypericum 'Magical Universe' is one of Elke's Faves this season...this is what she has to say:
Hypericum was a plant I loved having in my flower shop as a beautiful filler for bouquets. Last year I grew it myself for that reason and loved it as a shrub in my garden just as much. It offers interesting, dark green foliage edged in red and berries that start red and turn dark as they ripen!
This easy to grow shrub produces a mass of yellow flowers in the late summer and these are followed by red berries that turn dark as they ripen. This adaptable shrub can tolerate full sun to full shade as well as moist or dry soil.
They are noted for their beautiful foliage, showy flowers and decorative berries. Easily grown in moist but well-drained soils in full sun to partail shade but also tolerates full shade. Tolerates moist soils but is also considered drought tolerant. Plants benefit from a thick root mulch in cold winter climates. Hypericum develop extensive root systems and will self-seed in the garden, but not aggressively.
