Paeonia suffruticosa 'Kinkaku'

Paeonia suffruticosa 'Kinkaku'

Plant 'Kinkaku' in the full sun where the fragrant, fully double, coppery-orange blooms can be enjoyed by all. The blooms of this Tree Peony measure 5-7 in, 12-17 cm in diameter!

Paeonia suffruticosa are deciduous, woody shrubs that offer a wide range of petal colours including red, pink, purple, white and yellow. Some Tree Peonies need several years to get established before setting blooms but the wait is well worth it! Mature tree peonies can produce 100's of huge blooms for years. Cultivar flower forms range from single to semi-double to double. Its medium green foliage is deeply divided into oval to lance-shaped leaflets and remains attractive throughout the growing season. Tree Peonies are extremely showy and foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, either alone or as a frame or backdrop for other flowering plants.

Originating in China, the Tree Peony is long lived and may reach a height and width of 7' - 2m. Soil should be deep, rich and well-prepared. Peonies thrive on sun and plenty of water. Plant where they will be protected from wind. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring while the plant is still dormant. Peonies are considered to be relatively pest free and ants on peony buds are common and totally harmless. If plants do not flower, possible causes include (1) planted too deep or too shallow, (2) too much shade, (3) late frost killed buds or (4) plant is too young or has been recently moved or disturbed.
