My Enchanting Allium Collection was chosen with bees and people in mind. Alliums are special to me because they are unusual looking and, super important, they attract the bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects to your garden. The wow factor is also a consideration for me. I love adding fun, unusual and quirky plants into my garden, ones that may not be seen everywhere else. Alliums are good for the bees and good for my garden style.
Allium bulgaricum has been a favourite of mine for years now. I love watching the bees doing acrobatics, upside down and inside the dangling umbels. They are so industrious as they retrieve their payload from each flower. The flower resembles an umbrella with smaller umbrellas hanging from thick green threads. They are fun flowers and you cannot help but smile when you see them.
Allium christophii looks like a fireworks explosion in your yard. They will grow a little shorter than the others in the collection, which gives a nice variation that is pleasing to the eyes if you plant them in one area. Lovely mauve-pink flowers that create a loose ball with many stems that shoot out and produce smaller flowers. Bees love them, I love them, you will love them!
Allium ‘Hair’ is a ‘wild hair day’ flower! It has many green ‘hairs’ that fly out of the raspberry coloured balls. I like to plant them in groupings so they make a bigger impact. I have often seen passerby’s stop and get out their phones and take pictures. Wild!
Allium nigrum looks like a cupcake and when the bees are enjoying the flowers, they look like sprinkles on the cupcake. Sweet!
Allium sphaerocephalon are quirky-looking and they will bring many bees to your yard. They are small but mighty in that regard. Plant them close together for maximum impact and make it easier on the bees to get what they need.
The Enchanting Allium Collection would do well planted together in a nice sunny location with well-drained soil or planted separately where you want to attract the bees and deter deer and squirrels: they don’t like Alliums. Bonus!
The Enchanting Allium Collection includes 60 bulbs:
10 bulgaricum, 10 christophii, 10 ‘Hair’, 10 nigrum & 20 sphaerocephalon Alliums
