Gentiana 'Bella Alpinella' is one of Elke's Faves this season...this is what she has to say:
These bright blue bell-shaped flowers remind me of my childhood when we went hiking in the Dolomite Mountains of South Tirol where Gentianas grow wild. I have great memories of this time and will grow this plant in my garden as a wonderful reminder. It is a little powerhouse.
These mountain-meadow flowers are simply delightful and the cobalt-blue blooms are just stunning. Slow to start but worth the wait!
This plant finds is native to alpine grasslands, rocky meadows and alpine coniferous forests of the Caucasus Mountains. As such it is easily grown in moist, gritty-gravelly, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. Gentian prefer cool summer conditions and although their best flowering typically occurs in full sun they benefit from partial afternoon shade to help prevent the onset of leaf bleaching. It makes an excellent rock garden plant for use in alpine gardens and border edging. Great in containers too!
