Graham Thomas was chosen in 2009 as the World's Favourite Rose by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) which represents over 100,000 rose lovers in 41 member countries!
This very special award was announced at the 2009 World Rose Convention in Vancouver B.C., when the rose was inducted into the society's 'Rose Hall of Fame'. Recommended by David Austin as a personal favourite for being particularly reliable and healthy this is a strong-growing, healthy rose with large, glossy leaves, Graham Thomas is also one of the most widely grown English Roses. It has cupped flowers of medium size; their colour being an unusually rich and pure yellow that would be hard to match even among modern Hybrid Teas. The growth is upright but bushy and very vigorous, with shiny, pale green, disease-resistant leaves. It is an excellent rose, both in beauty and performance. Named for the late Graham Stuart Thomas, who was one of the most influential rosarians of our time.
We're very proud to have our David Austin English Roses are imported directly from their growing facilities in the United States. Mr David C.H. Austin is a world-renowned rose breeder and writer who lives in Shropshire, England. His emphasis is on breeding roses with the character and fragrance of Old Garden Roses but with the repeat-flowering ability and the wide colour range of modern roses like Hybrid Teas and Floribundas. Since its founding in 1969, he and his firm David Austin Roses in Albrighton, near Wolverhampton have introduced over 190 rose cultivars.
Cultivars have been named in honour of his family, well-known rosarians, geographical landmarks in Britain, historical events, and British writers, particularly Shakespeare and Chaucer, and their works or characters. In 2003, David Austin was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society for his services to horticulture and the Dean Hole Medal from the Royal National Rose Society.
