'Hot Rod' creates a nice look in the garden with its airy plumes of red flowers with pink overtones rising above the foliage from mid to late summer.
Panicum virgatum, commonly called switch grass, is easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to partial shade. It happily tolerates a wide range of soils, including dry ones and can also tolerate occasional flooding. It performs best in full sun. 'Hot Rod' grows primarily in clumps, but will slowly spread by slightly creeping rhizomes. Cut back clumps to the ground in late winter to early spring.
